A beloved fairytale and Academy Award®-winning movie, The Red Shoes has seduced audiences and inspired generations of dancers with its tale of obsession, possession, and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance, but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.

Matthew Bourne’s magical Double Olivier Award-winning adaptation of the legendary Powell and Pressburger film reunites the team who brought you New Adventures’ worldwide hit, Sleeping Beauty (Ahmanson Theatre, 2013), with sumptuous designs by Lez Brotherston (set and costumes), Paule Constable (lighting), and Paul Groothuis (sound).

This American premiere is set to a new score arranged by Terry Davies using the mesmerizing music of golden-age Hollywood composer, Bernard Herrmann (most famous for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, and Martin Scorsese), whose work ranges from the witty and playfully robust to the achingly romantic and bittersweet.

An intoxicating drama where life imitates art with fateful consequences, The Red Shoes will dazzle your senses and break your heart.

Presented by Center Theatre Group and Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center.

You don't have to be a ballet aficionado to fall under The Red Shoes' seductive spell. (I'm certainly not, and I did.) Balletophile or not, expect to stand up and cheer.

The omnipresent raison d'être for this production to have blossomed to fruition is the staging and choreography gifted us by its genius creator, a man who I swear must be part Michel Fokine, part Bob Fosse, a little Mandy Moore, and a lotta just plain Sir Matthew Bourne. No one before him has ever taken the perfection and rigidity of classic ballet and morphed it so successfully with a haunting art deco-angular sensibility and, above all, his signature sense of humor that infuses everything he touches. It's as though sometime in another life, Bourne was movement coach for Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy—that is when not coaching Vaslav Nijinsky himself.

Brilliant! Matthew Bourne has created something beyond ballet...a theatrical experience like no other.
