The Motherfucker With The Hat, is described as “a high-octane verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery.” Set in the working class neighborhoods of New York City, we follow the story of 2 star crossed lovers passionately trying to unravel years of codependence and addiction, as they struggle with their own flaws of mistrust, lust, and explosive tempers.

Not exactly what you’d call a recipe for a side-splitting comedy. Yet Steven Adly Guiguis brilliantly created a rapid-fire, poetically profane, and hilarious masterpiece that was a smash hit on Broadway, earning many awards, including the Tony nomination for Best Play. The New York Times called it “a bruising, tragicomic apache dance of love, betrayal and indecision. USA Today said “Funny indeed…not to mention surprising, disturbing and poignant…dark, rich comedy” The Wall Street Journal refers to it as a “unromantically romantic comedy that keeps you laughing, then sends you home thinking.”

Join us as we embark on a truly thrilling journey where a simple hat found in a living room threatens multiple relationships, sobriety, and life as we know it, in this intoxicating and elegantly vulgar look at the intricacies of love and other addictions.

Amazing actors! Wonderful plot with twists and turns. Great show with unbelievably talented actors. First rate acting and great story plot equals an excellent and exciting experience at the show.

YEAH! Gritty, full on, blood-sweat-and-tears-in-yo'-face-theatre!! Kickass work from the cast of MoFo W/The Hat. They work it, giving you a solid theatrical experience. This piece has depth, gravitas, grabs you by the cohones and takes you through a heart-wrenching theatrical rollercoaster of emotions. It has solid direction and a uniformly strong cast who play the junkies, abusers, abused and highly dysfunctional group of characters who are doing their best in life. The characters learn a little, grow a little, bounce around in their pain & try to better themselves. MoFo is a carefully constructed production that deserves to get an extended life. Great work!

Real! Vulnerable! Viscerally Stimulating! Acting at its Finest! Are just a few quick words to express my truest enjoyment and excitement as an audience member at this show! I was privileged to play the role of Victoria in my grad school alma mater production of Motherfucker, and when I heard of the showing, I jumped to the opportunity to witness the power of Guirgis' words again. Every character embodied their circumstances with rich expression through body movements, temperature of speech and spatial relation. The setting was very intimate but whoever the director was for this show, used every inch of that space with such specificity till it painted a clear picture for every scene. It was breathtaking to witness great actors live and breathe truthfully under imaginary circumstances! I highly recommend this show!!! Great work guys…. Elle Jae Stewart, Actress

This makes for a fascinating theatrical outing where one asks the question: if I were in the same predicament, what values would I identify with?

Went to support these artists after having seen the Original Broadway Production (capitalized , because well , people love this play and its playwright Stephen Adley Guirgis) and I was completely and utterly surprised that I (honestly) enjoyed this rendition far greater than the "big time" New York premiere. The cast was so lovely , and in the role which Chris Rock originated on Broadway , the actor who played the sponsor was so great comparatively - that I had an increased respect for the play because , well , I heard it this time with an actor in the role! All of them are great in the play , and I am a tough critic , ha. Atop all this , the director did a fabulous job of mounting this in an intimate space. I think this is one of the best small theater productions I have experienced in LA in a number of years. I would definitely recommend , and will plan to go back and bring my husband.

Poignant , thrilling , and powerful... this show will make your sides split from laughter but also leave you in deep reflection. The cast is energetic and engaging; delivering moving performances of rich characters that will have you entranced. If you didn't get to see The Motherfucker with the Hat on Broadway , now is your chance to see it in LA- powerfully directed by Tony Gatto , this production is H-O-T! Solid actors bring this story to life , leaving their sweat and tears on the stage. Playwright Stephen Guirgis would be proud of how the language is handled. Truly satisfying evening in the theater!

We weren't sure what to expect with this show , but we heard about it through a friend and was blown away by it! Definitely check this one out , especially if you're familiar with Guirgis or the source material.

An incredibly engaging production , and a very intimate experience for the audience. At times I felt I was witnessing private moments. An emotional and raw performance by a masterful cast. The comedy comes from circumstance , and the wonderful nuances of the characters and the writing. My favorite sort of comedy! Definitely some of the best theater I've seen in Los Angeles! After such a short run the first go-round , I'm thrilled it's being mounted again for longer. I can't wait to see it again!

So excited to hear this production is being remounted at Lyric Hyperion! This talented ensemble brings a heavy serving of wit to a dynamite play that will leave you thinking for hours after the curtain closes. Sparse but effective design along with sharp direction and a great pace makes for a powerful and invigorating evening of great LA Theatre!

I tend to avoid LA theater...can't stand to see a bad show. The cast was the draw for me this time and boy did they deliver! Powerhouse performances from all. Raw and provocative , this cast had me from the first line! Highly recommended and SO looking forward to seeing it again! - Amanda Lenker Doyle , CSA

A roller-coaster ride of a show in every good sense. Thrilling , terrifying , vertigo-inducing...and as soon as it's over you want to ride it again! A fantastic cast and the best kind of direction (you hardly notice it) - makes you laugh , makes you think , makes you cry. Go see it.

I'm so happy they are doing another run of this production. I've seen this play before and it never affected me like this production did. The director brought out such authentic and powerful performances from the actors. Go see it!!!

So refreshing to see engaging , moving theatre put on by a group of solid professionals. From direction to lighting design , a pluses across the board. You'll be taken on a great ride.

Outside of the major well funded playhouses of Los Angeles there is a quite a dearth of high quality theatre. It is rare that you find a diamond among the rough. Despite the red flag of a low budget production attempting to mount such an acclaimed work as 'Muthafucker.' However , I was lured in by my familiarity with several of the artists involved previous work. In short , I was thrilled by a wonderful night of theatre. The play is well known and demanding and the cast and direction kept pace step for step , beat for beat. If you are a fan of theatre and if you are not; I highly recommend this rare treat. 9 out of 10 stars.

I was lucky enough to catch this show in October and it was just phenomenal! The commitment from the cast across the board is inspiring from first moment to closing beat. Be prepared to go on a ride with these characters as they come to life through these incredibly talented actors who form a cohesive organism on stage.

When I try to single one person out , I can't , because they are all just fantastic each in their own way. Pallo is a master at bringing the internal struggle to his outward performance. Sanchez is devastatingly , gorgeously raw and gave me chills. DelRosario made me fall in love and then hate with his perfectly-flawed portrayal of the recovered-but-still-out-for-himself alcoholic. Ewing brings a level of quiet suffering to her performance that so aptly captures the plight of modern-woman Victoria. And last , but certainly not least , Martinez expertly supports the cast and audience with his effortless performance and endearing delivery of comedic relief.

I laughed , I cried , and as an actor , I was inspired to get back on stage because good theatre does exist here. This is one of the best shows I have seen since I moved to Los Angeles. Do yourself a favor and check it out , you will not be disappointed with this show! I for one am looking forward to seeing it a second time. Bravo!
