To begin her first novel, a cynical writer must resist the temptation to fill the void left by the nonsensical death of her admired brother. However, her only writing apparatus is her indentured Humanoid—a personal robot stocked with Netflix, porn, and existential angst.

The cast was superb. Corduroy Chapman is hilarious as Alfred and then handles the turn to seriousness with perfection. Ammy Ontiveros takes the audience on a touching journey to find that elusive human connection we all seek. She also handles comedy well, scoring big laughs with all of her comic moments. She is a talent. And Malachi Beasley delivers great supporting work as two distinctly different characters.

Such a unique look at the future: what would robots (aka humanoids) feel if they were to have human emotion. It slightly reminiscent of Bicentennial Man, but unique in its humorous take on life in general. The simplistic/straightforward thinking of a robot compared to the complicated feelings of emotion a human feels and goes through every day. It was humorous, but very thought-provoking as well. It’s surprisingly believable, the way society is going, that humans would be more comfortable confiding in robots than to other people when going through difficulties.

While the Human[OID] Experience is funny, it feels like two different plays. That being said, I think this show has potential.

Malachi Beasley shows up late in the play as Hedelle’s lover, Lamar. He is a strong presence in a small but effectictive role. A more nuanced perfomance from Ammy Ontiveros could have balanced the dynamic, but all in all, The Human(oid) Experience is a smart, funny piece with heart.
