SILENCE! THE MUSICAL

The Unauthorized Parody of The Silence of the Lambs

Music & Lyrics by Jon Kaplan & Al Kaplan, Book by Hunter Bell

Adapted from the screenplay “Silence! The Musical” by Jon & Al Kaplan

SILENCE! The Musical is a bawdy tribute to the iconic film “The Silence of the Lambs”. Rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling matches wits with brilliant but insane cannibal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, to catch serial killer Buffalo Bill. Clarice faces her own demons while racing the clock to unlock Lecter’s clues before another innocent girl is killed and skinned by Buffalo Bill. This laugh-out-loud naughty satire features a chorus of singing and dancing lambs, Buffalo Bill gleefully dancing a hoedown while kidnapping hapless Catherine Martin and even Dr. Lecter singing about the life he’d like to lead outside the prison walls.  Fueled by a rabid cult following after the songs debuted online in 2002, SILENCE! was expanded into a live stage show and shattered every box-office record at the 2005 FringeNYC Festival. Combining whip-smart dialogue and shocking songs, this comedic musical parody is sure to be popular with seasoned fans of the movie and FBI rookies alike. After winning the 2005 NYC Fringe’s Best Musical Award, it was listed in Time Magazine’s 2011 Top 10 Plays & Musicals, and won the 2012 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Musical and the 2012 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Musical Score.

FEATURING Jesse Merlin* (Dr. Hannibal Lecter), Amanda Conlon* (Clarice Starling), Nick Dothée* (Buffalo Bill), Brian Dyer* (Jack Crawford), Julie Ouellette (Catherine Martin), Kevin Michael Moran* (Dr. Chilton), Courtney Bruce* (Ardelia, Lamb), Jesse Gavin* (Stone Rockbrockmanrock, Lamb), Jeff LaGreca (Bimmel, Lamb), Tyler Marcum (Dream Lecter, Lamb), Philip McBride ( Papa Starling, Lamb), Suzanne Slade (Senator Martin, Lamb), Michael C. Yeah, it won't change your life. Sure, it's a bit childishly offensive. But oh, it is well performed and a good time if you're looking for something fun and different. Go on, silence that bleating and scratch the itch you didn't know you had with a ticket to this production before time runs out.

Well, Bucket List Theatre's production manages to pull it off. Not for children, or for folks with sensitive sensibilities, this show is at once hilarious, crass, wild and silly, and is guided by a chorus of singing, dancing lambs. Really.

Leave your church lady relatives at home; they wouldn't get the humor in the outrageously vulgar and oh-so-much fun lyrics and the general balls-to-the-walls playing of this uncouth parody.

Silence! The Musical by Jon and Al Kaplan with book by Hunter Bell has won my grand prize for the most inappropriate choice for a musical adaptation beating out Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Dr. Zhivago and Lestat (with a score by Elton John and Bernie Taupin no less!) But unlike the above-mentioned shows, Silence! The Musical actually works.

For those that hasn't seen the feature in a while (if at all), then this musical will make up for miss. It's a fun show to see, and just in time for All Hallow's Eve season, too! SILENCE! THE MUSICAL is the trick to treat!

Silence! hits its targets from all angles — sometimes quite broadly, other times with unexpected subtlety... Director, choreographer, production designer (and starring as Clarice) Amanda Conlon does a great job, milking every joke for all its worth, and staging the movement and scene changes with dead-on timing. Jon Kaplan and Al Kaplan's score is up to the job, with some nice touches sending up other musicals and musical theater genres.

This is such a brilliant show. Funny, smart, inventive and full of wonderful songs and so many opportunities for brilliance from the performers. I absolutely loved it!! Please, please do yourself a huge favor and get yourself out to Hollywood to see “Silence! The Musical” I guarantee you won't regret it…I'm definitely going back for more before November 3rd…
