“freewheeling irreverence & classical precision” – The Los Angeles Times
A summer season of free performances like no other! A beloved Los Angeles tradition, the Festival is freewheeling, inclusive and a bit anarchic. It’s an entire summer of mainstage performances, pre-show family events including workshops, a slate of extraordinary opening acts and diverting community events. Bring a blanket and a picnic to enjoy great theater in a great city. All free, all summer long.

PERICLES
Love is lost and found again in one of Shakespeare’s most spellbinding plays. PERICLES is an epic tale, spanning continents and decades, complete with knights errant, greek gods, pirates…and more than a little magic.

Begins July 27, plays through August 30
In repertory with Twelfth Night
Directed by Melissa Chalsma

The cast of Pericles features Patrick Batiste, Brent Charles, William Elsman, Hao Feng, Lorenzo Gonzalez, Aisha Kabia, Carene Rose Mekertichyan, David Melville, Kelvin Morales, Xavi Moreno, Bukola Ogunmola, Gyasi Silas and Sabra Williams.

Reviews

Incest, attempted murder, attempted rape, and a family desperately seeking out a better life only to be torn apart during a storm at sea that leads to a decade-plus-long separation. It sounds like a summary of some Facebook news feeds but no, this is William Shakespeare and George Wilkins’ Pericles… and in the capable hands of Independent Shakespeare Co.’s co-founder and Artistic Director Melissa Chalsma, it is a solidly funny good time.

Under Chalsma’s direction, the production is an example of how arresting Shakespeare can be when handled carefully and skillfully. The show is filled with bursting-with-life characters who drive a compelling plot forward. - RECOMMENDED

... while this play presents some challenges to those wishing to stage it, it also presents some wonderful opportunities for actors, for it contains some incredibly moving scenes at the end, as well as some delightfully humorous scenes early on. The Independent Shakespeare Company, of course, capitalizes on these opportunities in the current production of Pericles.
