This is a true story of transition, written by, and featuring, the two women who are living it: Mara a trans woman, lived as male most of her life. Mimi, a straight ciswoman, was raised in a traditional Catholic family. They met, fell in love and got married. And everything changed. For both of them.
“My Trans Wife” is a journey through the pain, joys and laughter of their relationship, as Mara struggles with her gender identity and Mimi struggles with letting go of long-held beliefs enough to acknowledge that she could love someone like Mara.

First and foremost, “My Trans Wife” is a love story: boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy and girl fall in love…(and then)…boy becomes the girl she always was…(and then!)…girl and girl ride off into the sunset and live happily every after. With gentle grace and wide-eyed innocence, Mimi and Mara portray themselves in this tender tale of how grand life can be when you have the courage to follow your heart. No, they don’t soften the horror of family rejection, societal shame, or even their own personal torment. But “My Trans Wife” always finds its way back to love. “My Trans Wife” refuses to preach at you, refuses to hide truth, and refuses to apologize for challenging you. This play simply invites you to come witness the universal rule that “love is love is love is love is love.” The best part of the experience? Knowing that Mimi and Mara will walk off the stage, leave the theater, and stroll down the street, and go back to just living their lives…together forever.
“My Trans Wife” takes the audience through the pain, joys and laughter of their relationship as a trans couple, as Mara struggles with her gender identity and Mimi struggles with letting go of long-held beliefs enough to acknowledge that she could love someone like Mara. It’s this authenticity and commitment that have allowed them to create new realms for love to exist outside of societal norms but completely from the heart.
I’m constantly learning new things by seeing and hearing what people have to deal with from society as a whole for being who they are. This show was another example of that. This couple is telling and showing the audience what it is like being in a relationship such as theirs-from family drama to society expectations and beyond. It’s one of those stories to you find yourself thinking “oh, I never thought of that”-as in difficulties transgender individuals go through that non-transgender individuals never think twice about. The two women are incredible, and lovely to chat with as well 🙂
