“Mandy Picks A Husband” Premieres at the 2019 Hollywood Fringe: A Solo Dramedy Written and Performed by Amanda Broomell

Mandy, nearing 40, living alone in LA with her 13-year-old cat, takes the audience on a hilarious 60-minute rollercoaster ride as she relives her odyssey to find the perfect life partner while simultaneously searching to find herself. Through twists and turns, laughs and tears, Mandy continuously spins from boyfriend to boyfriend, from self-help coach to healer, on a quest to unearth the magic elixir for her unmarried soul. “Mandy Picks A Husband” is Amanda Broomell’s new raw and witty autobiographical solo comedy of self-discovery and lifelong commitment.

Reviews

This show is smart and quick and led us down a path that I found to be incredibly brave – and also surprising. It so brilliantly moves from broad, big, safer concepts into more intimate, raw and personal memories meticulously, peeling back time and layers of understanding- always digging deeper and revealing more as she went. The structure was impeccable and it was so brilliantly executed, with specificity of movement and polish. And that polish does not get in the way of her vulnerability and authenticity – what a talent!

I haven't been able to stop raving about this show!! I was truly blown away by Amanda's storytelling, refreshing vulnerability, and laugh-out-loud humor all woven together to create something dynamic and moving. So much of her experience resonated with me deeply, and I imagine that anyone could see themselves in parts of her story. This is a must-see piece of art!!

A hilarious and touching journey through Mandy’s life experiences that kept me on the edge of my seat. Her story is raw, honest, personal, and told in such a clever and witty way. I LOVED all the singing and the song choices. Amanda can SING, and they were absolutely perfectly chosen and placed. The script is very, very witty and so well written. I thought there was a great arc to story and I enjoyed the ride.

Moving and hilarious! You’ll laugh and cry and feel everything in between. Mandy weaves the profound, true story of her relationship to relationships with such vulnerability. No matter where your own love life has taken you, you’ll relate and see yourself in her.

Amanda is a storyteller, actress, singer, and amazing entertainer. I found myself laughing out loud, crying or feeling as if I was living her story. ‘Mandy Picks a Husband’ is a powerful and vulnerable story and couldn’t be more relevant to the awakening that is happening today around how we protect our girls and what it means to be worthy as an adult woman.
This is a story that needs to be heard and a show that MUST be seen.
I liked how Amanda takes you in a very personal journey, filled with real-life challenges and moments that we can all relate to. I loved how through the story she intertwines songs from the ’90s and early 2000s that are perfect and hilarious.

One of the best shows at Fringe I’ve seen this far. This piece is so well done, so touching, so relatable, so playful, so full of freedom and joy. Amanda is a little kid again, and she holds the audience in her hand the entire time. I hope this show gets more attention. I know that I’ll for sure be recommending it because it would be a mistake not to see this.

The vulnerability of Amanda’s story is both relatable and endearing. We root for Mandy right out of the gate, as she takes us on her version of the ride to empowerment and self-acceptance that just about every human being experiences in their own way. We see ourselves in Mandy, and she gives us hope. Plus, as a fun literary device, Mandy occasionally breaks out in cover songs with new, original lyrics that act as a Greek chorus, which adds humorous commentary to her story. It’s a very element device that works well in the context of her show. I love it!

Mandy

Amanda is worthy of love, adoration, heaps of attention, and a standing ovation! That was one heck of a performance. A jaw dropping, belly laughing, thoroughly moving, polished and heartfelt performance. She is looking for love and it is the audience who ends up falling in love with her! Can we all squeeze in the ring please?!

How absolutely sexy, vulnerable, adorable, and downright empowered she is as she takes us through her journey of self discovery and acceptance that maybe she is just enough! And then half the sentences come out in song and we are thoroughly wooed by her performance. What a proposition! LOVE!

The theater could have been bigger! She has enough stage presence to fill a stadium!

This show is not one to miss it is well written, an amazing performance, and such a clever way of using music! Amanda is frank and honest and takes us on a heartfelt and maybe though it shouldn't be, comical journey.
Amanda can sing! Thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

What I liked

I loved, loved the musical part of the show. I had no idea that Amanda had such a good voice, and the timing of the musical bits were just perfect. The songs were recognizable but customized to flow within the play. Her ability to move between deeply unsettling ideas as part of her story to then come out on the other side in her story and performance was incredible.

What I didn't like

I would only say this because I do follow the instagram account and I know that she ends on talking about Zack which we think is out of the picture now. I’d want the latest and greatest update! But I can always look at instagram for that. :) I was born in 87 and I got MOST of the musical references but a couple I didn’t, which again, didn’t hurt the performance, but I do feel the ones that I did understand enriched the performance further.

My overall impression

My general impressions of this show was WOW. I felt like I was taken on a journey, a ride through a very layered and textured version of love.
